The human
occupation starts as of prehistory, the area being a country of
very old settlement. Potteries found in the cave of BAUME-granas
(with glazing bar) and the presence of dolmens on the plates
limestones which border Ardeche attest it. But it is difficult
to say when the man was installed on the current spot of the
village. Excavations and discoveries make it possible however to
know that with the 3° century before J.c. existed a Gallic
village, and that a Gallo-Roman village and its cemetery auprès
whose passed a Roman way remained until the 4° or 5° century
after J.c. One knows nothing the period suiv handle
which was the time of the cruel invasions.
It is around this place which was closed and strengthened, and
which one can see the gate of input (Place of the Church on the
right) that organized itself, during centuries, the old village
of RUOMS, the church (9) built in the shape of
Latin cross are more recent (11° - 12° century). Of pure
Romance style it was altered and one associated there 2 naves,
that of right-hand side to the 16° century and that of left to
the 19° century. It was strengthened besides (southern frontage)
as well as the village which probably surrounded by ramparts
this in XlV° century at the time of the one hundred year old
war. There were 7 turns of which 6 remain (5 Street of the Small
towers, 1 Place of the Republic). One reached in the enclosure
by 2 gates one the east preserved well (2), the other in the
visible west but on which one built a dwelling (3).
On the other hand one knows the approximate date of the
foundation of the current, fine village of X° century little
before the year millet, whose heart is the vault Our lady
of the apple trees (10) and its enclosure. Following a
donation with the BENEDICTINES OF CLUNY, made by a rich person
landowner: SIEUR SEGUIN, was created a priory clunisien. It is
probable that the current vault was built on the site, or close
to an old vault carolingienne (VII° century), because there are
medallions in re-employment on the gate of this one, (SAINT-marc
and HOLY MATHIEU). One can see in the enclosure the remainders
of the cloister. This site became a cemetery where as of the
Early middle ages one buried the Christians.
In this old borough where Ruomsois lived exclusively until there
end of 18° century, one can see some beautiful house Rebirth, the
house known as of Baron (4) close of gate western, build
by the lord of CHAUSSY (see voir castle of CHAUSSY) come himself
put with shelter some rampart during the war of religion de
religion, the house of notary (5) with a
stair-well d' escalier in shape of turn, the house of
guard (6) decorate of a fresco mural, It there have also
the house of Justice (7) qu one recognize with a
lintel where be engrave a balance, a cross and a key, Because
the prior successive be lord and Master of village until the
revolution where the priory ruined by internal fights was sold
like good national.
And RUOMS left its ramparts little by little as was established
the industrial era which saw the creation of the Breweries, the
textile factories and the intensive exploitation of the careers,
the national street was created at that time and the 7° turn
disappeared (8).
